Making the Most of Your RoboCupJunior Journey

A Veteran's Guide
Sep 16, 2025·4 min read · Also on Medium ↗

After nearly two decades in the RoboCup community, I've witnessed thousands of young minds discover their passion for robotics, engineering, and collaboration. As a former participant, an organizer, and someone who deeply values what this competition represents, I would like to share some insights that extend far beyond the technical aspects of building robots.

My reflections are inspired by a timeless article from our friend Marek Šuppa, written back in 2016 during the RoboCup in Leipzig and still remarkably valid today. In it, he wisely reminds us that 'things will go south' — and that's part of the magic, teaching resilience in real-world tech scenarios. Building on that, let's explore how AI and machine learning are now supercharging these lessons, turning robot mishaps into data-driven triumphs, and how global teamwork in RoboCup is sparking STEAM innovations that bridge cultures and continents.

The Real Victory Isn't on the Scoreboard

While trophies and rankings have their place, the most profound victories happen in the quiet moments between rounds, in late-night debugging sessions, and in the friendships that span continents. The connections you forge and the learning experiences you embrace will outlast any medal. I've watched peers transform from eager participants into engineers, researchers, and leaders — many of whom still credit RoboCupJunior as their launchpad. I'm in that club, too.

Embrace the Super Teams Challenge

When you encounter the super team's challenges, don't just participate — immerse yourself entirely in the experience. These collaborative experiences mirror real-world engineering projects, where diverse perspectives lead to breakthrough solutions. Your curiosity is your greatest asset. Ask questions relentlessly. If you're struggling with a concept, speak up. If you spot something innovative in another team's approach, inquire about it. Let your curiosity guide you.

Think Like an Undergraduate Team

Take a step back — you might not realize it, but you're playing in the big leagues. Your projects echo those of top undergrad teams: research, rapid prototyping, all-nighters over stubborn bugs — skills that define engineering careers. Recognize the sophistication of what you're accomplishing and carry that confidence forward.

Show Grace to the Judges

Judges are volunteers, juggling fair play and fast schedules — often in a language not their own. Sometimes, they even spend their full vacations on this commitment. Your patience turns challenging logistics into lasting memories for everyone.

Share Generously

The team struggling today might be the one helping you tomorrow. RoboCupJunior thrives on mutual support and knowledge sharing. When you discover a breakthrough or solve a persistent problem, share that knowledge with others. The community's collective growth benefits everyone, and your generosity will be remembered and reciprocated.

Document Your Journey Thoughtfully

Keep a journal, but make it comprehensive and detailed. Record not just your robot's evolution, but your own learning milestones, breakthrough moments, and future aspirations. The excitement of competition can overwhelm you with ideas. Still, those insights fade quickly once you return to regular sleep schedules. Capture them while they're fresh.

Maintain Your Global Network

The friendships you build here transcend geographical boundaries. These peers share your passion, understand your challenges, and often become lifelong collaborators. Stay connected through social media, collaborative projects, or simply sharing your continued journeys in robotics and beyond.

Plan Your Next Chapter

As your participant years conclude, consider exploring opportunities to give back to the community that has shaped you. Whether through mentoring new teams, joining organizing committees, or contributing to rule development, your experience remains valuable. We, the organizers, are always seeking passionate individuals who understand the participants' perspective.
