Want to inspire creativity, teamwork, and cutting-edge tech skills in young people? Here's how RoboCupJunior can change a classroom, a community — and maybe even the world, with your help.
What Makes RoboCupJunior Special?

Why Start a RoboCupJunior Team? (And Why Now)
Empower Young Problem Solvers
RCJ isn't just a robotics contest — it's a launchpad for the next generation of thinkers, coders, artists, and leaders. With leagues in Soccer, Rescue, OnStage, and Simulation, there's a path for every passion: engineering, programming, design, storytelling, and beyond.
No Experience Necessary
You don't need a robotics lab or prior experience to get started. All you need is curiosity and a willingness to learn together. Teams as small as 2–3 students can build, program, and present their autonomous robots using affordable kits (such as LEGO, Arduino, or virtual simulators).
Instant Community
Join a global network of supportive mentors, teachers, and alums. Share ideas, find helpful tutorials, and discover resources from peers around the world. Competitions are famously collaborative — even at world championships, teams help each other grow.
Growth Beyond the Classroom
RCJ brings STEAM to life: combining science, technology, engineering, art, and math in real problem-solving. Students learn resilience, teamwork, creativity, and communication — skills that matter in every future career.
Five Steps to Kickstart Your New RoboCupJunior Team
1. Pick Your League
- Soccer: Robots face off in dynamic, AI-driven matches.
- Rescue: Code robots to navigate and save "victims" in real-world-inspired challenges.
- OnStage: Blend music, dance, and storytelling with robotics — creativity is the star.
- Simulation: Join virtually with SoccerSim/RescueSim — just a laptop needed!
2. Find Your Crew
Gather 2–4 students and at least one adult mentor or teacher. Build a diverse team — techies, creatives, leaders, and tinkerers all have something to offer.
3. Register and Connect
Contact your local RCJ organizer or national representative — many offer scholarships, starter kits, and training. Follow deadlines for regional and national qualifiers.
4. Start Building… and Learning
Utilize affordable kits or begin with a simulation league for a low-cost entry point. Leverage dozens of free tutorials, YouTube walkthroughs, and community guides to go from zero to robot-hero. Document your progress — photos, code, lessons learned.
5. Embrace the Spirit
Encourage teamwork, creativity, and resilience. Celebrate every prototype, bug fix, and test run — RCJ is about growth, not just trophies. Network with teams worldwide and present your work proudly.
Best Practices for New Teams
- Start Small, Think Big: Don't worry about perfection; iterate often, and celebrate every improvement.
- Learn Together: Let students drive creativity — mentors should guide, not direct.
- Promote Inclusion: Diversity in skills and backgrounds makes teams stronger.
- Reflect & Share: After every event or build session, recap what worked and what could be better.
- Tap the Community: Join RCJ forums, attend workshops, and ask questions — the network is your most fantastic resource.
"We Started with Curiosity — Now We're Innovators"
"Our first year in RoboCupJunior, we struggled to code a basic robot. By working together, sharing failures and laughs, we not only competed — we built lasting friendships and the confidence to tackle challenges we never imagined."
— Team Mentor, New York
