All 41 active Broadway theaters in Manhattan, the last of them on 28 February 2025 at the Minskoff. That finished the map, not the habit — the most recent night in this log is August 2026, and the list is still growing. You will not find this page in any menu: one unmarked door on the homepage, and you opened it. You came in the stage door, round the back, the way the company does. Glad you did.

Three nights

Why I keep the paper

A Playbill goes to print weeks before the night you are holding it, which makes it a plan rather than a record. What actually happened is on a loose slip tucked inside, naming whoever went on instead — an understudy from the company, or a standby paid to sit in the building all evening on the chance they are needed. Most people drop them in the lobby on the way out.

My Playbill for Chicago
Chicago 6 February 2022 · Ambassador

Bianca Marroquín's first night as Roxie Hart. The printed page still had her down as Velma Kelly, and so did her own printed bio; a pasted insert welcomed her into Roxie instead — the part she made her Broadway debut in twenty years earlier, in 2002. She is from Monterrey, and the reason I booked the night.

My Playbill for The Music Man
The Music Man 15 June 2022 · Winter Garden

Hugh Jackman tested positive for Covid a few hours after performing at the Tony Awards on 12 June, and his standby Max Clayton played Harold Hill from the 14th to the 21st. This was Clayton's second night in the part. Sutton Foster was still Marian. I had a ticket to Hugh Jackman and got a man who had caught a train to be there — which is the whole reason I keep these slips.

My Playbill for Gypsy
Gypsy 23 February 2025 · Majestic

Nine roles on one slip, Rose among them — Audra McDonald did not go on, and Tryphena Wade played her. It is the longest insert in the collection, and the only reason I know is that I still have the piece of paper.

Ten more nights are written up further down, beside the company I actually saw on each of them.

The split

What I saw, and what I loved

The shape of the whole log in three bars — and the second one counts the 15 I would go back to, which are the covers immediately below.

seen
54 musicals 16 plays
favorites
10 musicals 5 plays
form
53 new productions 17 revivals

These count productions, not nights. The middle bar is the point: plays are 23% of the productions I saw and 33% of the ones I loved, so a play I saw was roughly 1.7 times as likely to be one I would see again. On 16 plays and 15 favorites, that is a description of this log, not a reliable rate — it would move if I saw four more plays.

Liberation James Earl Jones · December 2025 · Play

The 1970s and the present argue with each other in real time. Best Play in 2026, its first Broadway season.

Seen with my dad — a powerful story of six women fighting to be heard and seen, told through real struggles and the price of pushing for change. It traces how legacy forms across generations, drawing a sharp parallel between the fights women faced in the 1970s and the ones they still face today. A reminder that progress isn't always a straight line.

Marianne Elliott's revival turned Bobby into Bobbie and won Best Revival of a Musical.

I saw this on the eve of turning 34 — one year shy of Bobby's own milestone birthday in the story — which made it an unexpectedly personal night of reflection on what society expects of us versus what we actually want. Sondheim's storytelling is sharp, funny, and genuinely enjoyable from start to finish.

A rumble staged in real falling rain, and Best Musical of 2024 — produced by Angelina Jolie with Coppola's American Zoetrope, which made the 1983 film.

A love story that transcends where you come from, built around trust, connection, and the support systems — chosen or otherwise — that carry us through life. Not everyone will agree on every choice, but the music and the emotional connection are undeniable.

The DeLorean takes off over the audience — projection mapping and practical effects, years in the perfecting.

One of my favorite movies, brought to life onstage — and I went back multiple times. Great story, great cast, and a genuinely impressive stagecraft trick: making the DeLorean actually appear to fly in front of you.

The plot was written to fit ABBA's back catalog, not the other way round — and a curtain call the entire house gets up for.

Energetic and fantastic — a full-throttle celebration of ABBA that makes it nearly impossible to sit still. The cast could be sharper, but the production values and the pure joy of singing and dancing along carry the night.

Come from Away Gerald Schoenfeld · May 2022 · Musical

Twelve actors play an entire Newfoundland town in a hundred minutes, no interval. The real Gander still holds reunions with the passengers it took in.

This one introduced me to a whole different side of Broadway — theater that teaches real history. It tells the true story of 38 planes grounded in Gander, Newfoundland on 9/11, and the unlikely friendships that formed between stranded passengers and the small town that took them in. Funny, moving, and rooted entirely in fact.

The Notebook Gerald Schoenfeld · March 2024 · Musical

Three pairs of actors play the same couple at three ages, sharing the stage at once.

A story told through three different actors playing the same two characters across different stages of their lives. I needed a box of tissues the entire time — the emotional weight of watching a love story unfold across a lifetime hits differently live than on screen. Hard to put into words.

Stage effects that made the reviews in London and New York both reach for the word impossible.

Defying Gravity, and the act-one curtain that made the show a phenomenon — Elphaba's flying rig checked before every single performance.

One of my all-time favorites — I've seen it twice and would happily go again. The music, the characters, the sheer craft of the performances pull you so deep into the story that the outside world disappears. Pure magic, every time.

Miranda read Chernow's biography on holiday and had the opening number almost at once. The score changed what a musical was allowed to sound like.

Electrifying doesn't even cover it. We scored $10 lottery tickets and ended up front row — and for all that it's streaming on Disney+, nothing comes close to seeing it live.

The South Park creators' satire, written with Avenue Q's Robert Lopez — still selling out fifteen years after it opened.

My very first Broadway show, caught during Broadway Week — which is exactly why it holds a permanent spot in my heart. It was the opening night of what's become countless hours in front of stage lights since. Joyful, irreverent, and insightful, it remains one of my favorite places on earth.

Nathan Lane, Danny Burstein and Zoë Wanamaker, three-handed — from Larry Sultan's photo book on photographing his own parents.

This one hit differently — it brought back my grandfather, who loved photography and old home movies, the slide projectors and reels I remember from childhood. Beyond that, it's a beautifully told story about family, memory, and how we choose to preserve the people we love.

Rob McClure's quick-changes — some in seconds, some in full view of the house, eight shows a week.

Hilarious from start to finish, and Rob McClure's ability to flip between two roles within the same show is a genuine feat to witness live. I saw it twice — the second time with visiting family, who loved it just as much. Between the physical comedy and the sharp writing, it's a guaranteed good time for any crowd.

Debra Messing never leaves the stage and never changes costume — ninety minutes, seventeen years old to a hundred and one.

Decades of one woman's life in a single kitchen. It captures how quickly it all moves — how people enter and leave, how some stay and some don't. A gentle nudge to own your life while you still can. This one hit close to home and left me reflecting long after.

What 41 of 41 means

The rooms, not the shows. "Every active Broadway theater" is a claim about 41 buildings, so here is what they are.

When each house opened, and the answer is mostly a long time ago: 35 of the 41 were open before 1930, 19 of them in the twenties alone, with the hatched columns marking decades that built nothing still standing. The newest is the Lyric (1998). Three of them opened in 1903 — the Hudson, the Lyceum and the New Amsterdam — which makes them older than the Chrysler Building by more than a quarter of a century.

The signature

Thirteen thousand performances, or seventeen

70 of the 70 productions, one line each. First preview to closing, or to today for the 17 still running, every run drawn the same width so the shapes compare. The tick is my seat. 13 of my 78 nights were previews, before the show had officially opened; 18 were in a run's final six weeks.

The two ends of that comparison are further apart than the chart can show: of the runs that have finished, The Phantom of the Opera played 13,981 performances and KPOP played 17 — it closed 14 days after opening night. I saw both.

Three tracks — Company, Mrs. Doubtfire and Six — show a preview period of nearly two years. All three started previews in the weeks before Broadway shut down in March 2020, and none of them opened until the autumn of 2021. On those rows the hatch is the pandemic, not a preview run.

Between them those 21 took 53 of the 130 awards.

Scale

A musical can be two people

All 70 productions, against the size of the company I watched that night. Musicals hang left of the scale, plays right; one mark is one show, and shows the same size step outward. The medians are 22 and 7.5. Named here: the biggest and smallest few of each, and every one of my favorites wherever it lands.

The rule holds in the middle and falls apart at both ends. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a play with 36 people on stage — a bigger company than 52 of the 54 musicals. Going the other way, 4 musicals are smaller than the median play: Gutenberg!, Redwood, Six and A Strange Loop.

The green is the 15 I liked best, and they are the flattest thing here: 6 of them are in the largest third of the log, 4 in the middle and 5 in the smallest. A three-hander was as likely to be one of my favorites as a company of 36. Whatever it is I go back for, it is not the size of the payroll.

The stubs

I paid $10 for Hamilton

Every one of my 78 nights still has a stub. Across the 78 that do: $4,315 in total, $55 a night, and 77% of them came from a lottery or a rush queue rather than being bought at the going rate.

lottery or rush

Every ticket I still have, in ten-dollar bands. Anything under $60 on this stretch of Broadway was a lottery or a rush seat, and the green columns are those — 60 of 78, or 77%. The seller cannot tell you this; the same platforms issue a rush ticket and a full-price one, so the price is the only honest signal. The cheapest night was $10, Hamilton, and the dearest $201, Mamma Mia!.

STAGEORCHESTRA58 nightsMEZZANINE14 nightsBALCONY6 nights

A Broadway house in section. The orchestra is the ground floor in front of the stage, the mezzanine the first tier above and behind it, and the balcony the one above that — so the three words are heights, not directions. The darker a tier, the more of my nights were spent in it.

orchestra · $57 avg · 76% lottery or rush58
mezzanine · $54 avg · 79% lottery or rush14
balcony · $47 avg · 83% lottery or rush6

Where I actually sat, what each part of the house averaged, and how much of each tier came from a lottery or a rush queue — the green share of every row. The orchestra is not the expensive habit it looks like — on these stubs it cost about what the mezzanine did.

Who's who

The part you know is not the part I saw

The bio pages at the back of a Playbill lead with the Broadway credit and bury the screen work in fine print, because in that building the stage is the main job. Recognition runs the other way: the face arrives first, then the name, then everything else. 17 faces, across 13 of the 78 cast pages I kept, in the order I saw them — and one more who was printed and did not appear.

Stage fame is a different thing and is not counted here — several people in this log are far better known inside a theater than anyone on this list.

Shaina Taub wrote the book, the music and the lyrics, and played Alice Paul. Seven other people in this log turn up on their own title page — Billy Crystal wrote Mr. Saturday Night, Ian Shaw wrote The Shark Is Broken, the three who wrote Peter Pan Goes Wrong all played in it — but she is the only one who wrote all three of the book, the music and the lyrics and then went on.

The corrections do not fall evenly. 28 of the 31 corrected cast pages are musicals, and 17 of the 18 nights a principal went on. A corrected page has a median company of 23 against 17 for one that needed no correction — the bigger the show, the more of it can go wrong — which is the shape the scale above was drawing.

None of this is recorded anywhere else: a cast list is a snapshot of an intention and the slip is the correction, so the answer to "who did I actually see" survives only on a piece of paper the size of a receipt. The worst of them changed 9 parts in one evening.

The credits

The same people, hired again and again

On the stage

Start with the performers, counting only parts that have a name — an ensemble track moving between shows says something about how Broadway hires and nothing about what I saw. 981 people held a named part on one of these nights. 3 of them held one in three different productions.

On stage
Aliah James3
On stage
Raymond J. Lee3
On stage
Zachary Noah Piser3

60 more held a named part in two of them. Now ask the same of the people who built the shows.

And behind the curtain

The busiest name in each of the nine jobs a title page prints: book, music, lyrics, direction, choreography, set, costumes, lights and sound. That makes 15 cards rather than 9, because a tie at the top of a craft keeps everybody in it — lyrics, direction, choreography and set are level; and 14 people rather than 15, because Casey Nicholaw leads two of them. Under each is every show of theirs I sat through, and a is one of my 15 favorites.

Pick a title to see only the people above who worked on it.

17 of the 70 productions were made by more than one of them. Some Like It Hot took three: Casey Nicholaw on direction and choreography, Scott Pask on the set and Natasha Katz on lights. Kander and Ebb hold different jobs and the same three shows, forty years of writing together arriving twice. Gareth Owen has the longest list, 7 of them, and both of Jack Thorne's are favorites.
